The current method of converting plant sugars to fuels uses the centuries-old fermentation practices relied on to make beer and wine. Those methods have proved inadequate in the production of biofuels, especially on the large scale necessary to meet the Department of Energy's goals for biofuels. EBI researchers are searching for ways to boost the concentration of fuel produced, thus shrinking the cost and increasing the demand for this environmentally friendly substance.
Principal Investigators (PIs) and Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) share the responsibilities for the goals and objectives of their research project. Together, they manage the scientific, fiscal and administrative aspects that encompass the work, including the efforts of collaborators or other participants.
